#11 NE Golf

It’s cold. Stupid cold. I wake up, grab a Dunkin and while in the store think…could I cancel this round? I could, I’m likely to go back through Nebraska in late May. But I’m here, temps below 40 degrees, winds howling. Likely makes for a great story, memorable at least. Might as well, right?

The ponder before the play

So I show up at the course and it’s…deserted. One other vehicle, a truck hauling a camper. I gear up, head inside and meet Lance, who I believe is the club pro and the superintendent. Not quite sure. We chat for about 15 minutes, I grab my gear and get out there.

Lance is smiling because he doesn’t have to golf in this weather

Head out there and yeah, it’s brutally cold. Windy. Felt like every shot was contested. But a really fun course layout. It’s definitely hilly as the Hillside course advertised. Some unique landscaping with some of the hills around. I walked the course, primarily to avoid the wind while in the cart driving. Bundled up, fortunately around the 7th hole the sun and temperatures increased. There was one other couple on the course who traveled in from CO to golf a few courses in NE. They figured it would be warmer. They were wrong.

The sights from the course

I will say, it was probably one of the windiest rounds of golf I’ve ever played in. The course jogs around the railroad tracks and at times was protected by the elements. But more often than not it was just relentless. Can’t imagine playing this as my home course. The town has changed a bit, it used to be the headquarters of Cabela’s but they moved a few years ago. Definitely could tell executives lived there, big houses around the course. Lance was sharing how the property value tanked once they relocated. Totally makes sense.

Wind did that

Had some good play to start, but toward the end of the front 9 I struggled and carried that on the back, starting double, double. 84 overall, felt like a disappointment even with the elements. Heated up some late lunch at the clubhouse, then pushed west to Cheyenne. Even though it was day 1 of vacation, I had a small business cohort class to deliver. Great attendance, wandered around the town for a bit and called it a night as the snow was falling.
